چکیده

Global geologic maps are useful tools for efficient interpretation of a planetary body, and they provide global context the diversity evolution surface. We used data acquired by OSIRIS-REx spacecraft to create first map near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu. As this is small, non-spherical, rubble-pile asteroid, we discuss distinctive mapping challenges best practices that may be future exploration similar asteroids, such as those visited with Hera Janus missions. By on two centimeter-scale image mosaics (2D projected space) shape model (3D space), generated three input respectively describing Bennu's features, surface texture. Based these maps, defined units: Smooth Unit Rugged Unit. The units differentiated primarily basis texture, concentrations boulders, distributions lineaments, mass movement craters. They bounded several scarps. contains abundant boulders signs recent movement. It also has fewer small (<20 m), putatively fresh craters than Unit, suggesting have been erased in former. indicators, infer younger two. Differential crater size-frequency distribution freshest suggest both unit surfaces formed ~10–65 million years ago, when Bennu was located Main Asteroid Belt, not significantly resurfaced past 2 years. Meanwhile, experienced resurfacing within ~500,000 during lifetime asteroid. consistent slope, roughness, normal albedo, thermal emission spectral characteristics. site where mission collected regolith sample nested larger one. So although an older impact-crater setting indicates material sampled recently exposed. Several similarities apparent between (162173) Ryugu from perspective, including distinguishable variations number density well other datasets brightness.

Surface thermophysical properties determination of OSIRIS-REx target asteroid (101955) Bennu

In this work, we investigate the thermophysical properties of OSIRIS-REx target asteroid (101955) Bennu (hereafter Bennu), where thermal inertia plays an important role in understanding the nature of the asteroid’s surface, and will definitely provide substantial information for the sampling return mission. Using a thermophysical model incorporating, the recently updated 3D radar-derived shape ...

Shape model and surface properties of the OSIRIS-REx target Asteroid (101955) Bennu from radar and lightcurve observations

We determine the three-dimensional shape of near-Earth Asteroid (101955) Bennu based on radar images and optical lightcurves. Bennu was observed both in 1999 at its discovery apparition, and in 2005 using the 12.6-cm radar at the Arecibo Observatory and the 3.5-cm radar at the Goldstone tracking station. Data obtained in both apparitions were used to construct a shape model of this object. Obse...

The Complicated Geologic History of Asteroid 4 Vesta

Planetary scientists are pretty sure that almost all of the HED meteorites come from the fourth-largest asteroid, 4 Vesta. HED stands for the three types of rocks that make up the group. As cosmochemists have studied the meteorites over the years, their view of the geologic history of the asteroid has become progressively more complicated. Jean-Alix Barrat and Marcel Bohn (CNRS and University o...
